York is a cathedral and industrial city
(railway rolling stock, scientific
instruments, sugar, chocolate, and glass), it
is situated in North Yorkshire, (North
England). The city is visited by 3 million
tourists a year. It features The Gothic York
Minster contains medieval stained glass, the
south transept was severely damaged by fire
in 1984, but has been restored. Much of the
14th-century city wall survives, with four
gates or `bars', as well as the medieval
streets collectively known as the Shambles
(after the slaughterhouse). The Jorvik Viking
Centre, opened in 1984 after excavation of a
site at Coppergate, contains wooden remains
of Viking houses.
